About this simulation

A 90-minute, 4-round Express simulation on the first two years of a first salaried job: the 401(k) contribution and the Roth choice, the employer match and its vesting, and the order in which a paycheck pays a credit card, federal student loans, an emergency fund and retirement.

For personal-finance and financial-literacy courses at Hispanic-Serving Institutions, introductory finance, career-transition seminars and early-career employee education. Bilingual EN/ES.

Alameda Ridge Diagnostics (a fictional clinical-laboratory network in Albuquerque, New Mexico): as Nayeli, a first-generation graduate hired at $51,000 with a 24% card and $27,000 of federal student loans, you decide the contribution and what to do with the card, how to repay the loans and where to keep an emergency fund (with the plan's student-loan match and emergency savings account), how to pay for a broken transmission and what to do with a raise, and when to accept a better offer and what to do with the 401(k) you leave behind.

Scored on net worth, employer match earned, interest, fees, taxes and penalties, the emergency buffer and the credit score.

Who it is for

An intermediate simulation for participants who already know the core concepts of the subject, designed for master's and MBA programmes.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: Monday 2 August 2027: the contribution and the card.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.
