About this simulation

A 90-minute, 4-round basic Express simulation for Spanish vocational training (Formacion Profesional), module 1480 Comercializacion de productos graficos y atencion al cliente, shared by the Tecnico Superior en Diseno y Gestion de la Produccion Grafica (Real Decreto 175/2013) and the Tecnico Superior en Diseno y Edicion de Publicaciones Impresas y Multimedia (Real Decreto 174/2013), also usable in module 1538 Gestion de la produccion en la industria grafica.

The learner is Nerea Arrubal, a newly qualified graphic-production technician who writes the quotes and looks after the clients of a fictional commercial print shop in Logrono through 2027: about 1,150 quotes a year, 22% of them converted, an offset press, a digital press and a finishing line.

Four situations set the year's course: 31% of last year's work invoiced at a loss and an online printer selling cheap flyers, and how the quotes are built (from the escandallo of each job) and which orders are accepted (against the machine hours and a minimum margin); a year of coated paper on offer, jobs reprinted for bad files and a client's mailing list somebody wants to keep, and how the client's files and data are handled (prepress check, signed proof, data used only for the job) and how the paper is bought (for each job from its escandallo); a summer of late jobs and overdue invoices and a client who wants to pay in cash with no invoice, and how the summer and the urgent jobs are planned (a weekly machine-load plan) and how the orders are collected (a deposit and the invoice on delivery); and the Christmas season of claims, and how claims are answered (recorded, checked against the proof, answered in 48 hours) and how the year is recorded (a quotes record with the post-calculation of every job).

Two critical errors cap the round: a client's mailing list kept for the shop's own offers and an order paid in cash over the legal limit with no invoice. KPIs: work with margin, controllable cost, sheets spoiled or reprinted per 1,000 and clients lost. Lesson: quoting blind wins orders that lose money. Spanish primary, English parity. Fictional print shop, company and people; real curriculum and rules cited.

What participants learn

After the session, participants will be able to:

  • Calculate a print quote from its cost sheet: paper with its spoilage allowance, plates, make-ready and running hours, finishing, prepress and transport, plus a margin checked against the market
  • Evaluate which orders to accept against the week's machine hours and a minimum margin, and explain why accepting everything and refusing every small run both lose
  • Apply a prepress check and a signed proof before the plates, and explain why a client's mailing list may be processed only for the job and never kept for the shop's own offers
  • Plan a weekly machine-load schedule with urgent jobs priced, a deposit and an invoice on delivery, and refuse a cash payment over the legal limit with no invoice, with the reason
  • Design a quotes record of conversion by job type, quoted against real cost, spoiled sheets and clients lost with their cause, and answer every claim within 48 hours against the signed proof

Who it is for

An introductory simulation that assumes no prior knowledge of the subject, designed for undergraduate courses. It also works in vocational and high-school programmes and in onboarding sessions.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: lunes 11 de enero, 9:00: los presupuestos y los pedidos.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • Cómo se hacen los presupuestos
  • Qué pedidos se aceptan
  • Cómo se tratan los originales y los datos
  • Cómo se compra el papel
  • Cómo se planifican el verano y las urgencias
  • Cómo se cobran los pedidos
  • Cómo se atienden las reclamaciones
  • Cómo se registra el año
