About this simulation

The learner is Nerea Cabanero, network crew technician of a fictional county distribution company, on call the night a storm trips a 20 kV overhead line feeding 26 transformer substations and 3,600 customers.

Four rounds, four phases of one outage: the trip (read the protection, the fault passage indicators and the single-line diagram with the control centre; go out as a two-person crew with protective equipment and an agreed plan), sectionalising to locate (split the line by halves with a single test close per step; operate the pole switch locally with gloves and stool and confirm its position), isolating the faulted section (visible break at both ends, prevent backfeed from a farm generator and solar plant, verify absence of voltage, earth both sides; cordon off and hand over in writing) and restoring (customers on both sides restored, the tie point closed only once the section is open at its far end; the repaired section returned in reverse order with nobody and no earths left).

Eight four-option decisions scored on switching safety, delay, avoidable customer-minutes off supply (an author proxy for the TIEPI the brief names) and coordination with the control centre; four critical errors cap the round at 40: closing again and again onto a fault, working without verifying and earthing, closing a tie point onto an unisolated section, and re-energising without checking people and earths.

Lesson: sectionalising with method restores more customers in less time. Training level only: decision practice that complements supervised practical training; fictional company, places and people; no real operational figures. Spanish player-facing strings with full English parity.

What participants learn

After the session, participants will be able to:

  • Locate a fault before switching by reading the protection, the fault passage indicators and the single-line diagram with the control centre, and go out as a crew of two with an agreed plan
  • Sectionalise a faulted line by halves with one test close per step, restore the healthy half at once and never close again and again onto a fault
  • Make the faulted section dead and hand it over: a visible break at both ends against every backfeed source, absence of voltage verified, earths on both sides and the fallen conductor cordoned off
  • Decide how to restore every customer who can be restored, from the head and through the tie point, closing the tie only once the far end is confirmed open and the other line can take the load
  • Evaluate the outage as a whole after returning the section in reverse order on a signed end of work, and argue with figures why the fastest-looking and most cautious-looking options are rarely best

Who it is for

An intermediate simulation for participants who already know the core concepts of the subject, designed for master's and MBA programmes.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: Miércoles 10 de febrero, 05:40: el disparo.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • Qué lees antes de salir
  • Cómo sales
  • Cómo seccionas para localizar
  • Cómo maniobras el aparato del apoyo
  • Cómo aíslas el tramo
  • Cómo delimitas y entregas la zona
  • Cómo repones a los clientes
  • Cómo devuelves el tramo al servicio
