About this simulation

A 90-minute, 4-round basic Express simulation for Spanish vocational training (Formacion Profesional, grado superior), module 0675 Coordinacion de equipos humanos of the Tecnico Superior en Centrales Electricas.

You are Nerea Escalonilla, newly appointed shift chief of a fictional 50 MW biomass power plant in the province of Jaen that runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with four positions on every shift and five crews. Over the 52 weeks of 2027 you lead the shift team.

Round by round you decide the shift pattern (8-hour shifts rotating forward, backward rotation with quick returns, 12-hour shifts or a fixed night crew) and the crews (a relief crew, five crews with no relief, three on nights or agency operators); training (simulator drills, a classroom refresher, none or online in their own time) and the shift handover (a structured handover with a log and overlap, verbal, a phone message or none); how to handle a conflict between two operators and how to plan the summer holidays; and how to manage night fatigue and respond to a human-error trip of the boiler.

Each week fatigue, sickness absence, cover, overtime, human-error incidents, trips and the team climate are recomputed. Each round is scored on expected human-error incidents, position coverage, team climate, overtime hours and cost, with expected trips and infractions shown but not scored. The fatigue of the shift is an operational risk, not only a labour one.

A fixed night crew imposed on the newest, or covering the summer with double shifts, caps the score (Estatuto de los Trabajadores arts. 36.3, 34.3 and 35.2). Spanish with English.

Who it is for

An introductory simulation that assumes no prior knowledge of the subject, designed for undergraduate courses. It also works in vocational and high-school programmes and in onboarding sessions.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: Lunes 4 de enero de 2027: el cuadrante y la plantilla.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.
