About this simulation

A 90-minute, 4-round basic Express simulation for Spanish vocational training (Formacion Profesional), module 0580 Establecimientos de floristeria of the Tecnico en Jardineria y Floristeria (Real Decreto 1129/2010), also usable in module 0581 Tecnicas de venta en jardineria y floristeria.

The learner is Noelia Bergua, a newly qualified florist who runs the buying and the shop floor of a fictional neighbourhood flower shop in Zaragoza through 2027: one shop of about 90 m2 with a cold room and a workshop, cut flower bought twice a week at a flower auction and peak flower booked with a grower.

Four situations set the year's course: a wasteful first Monday before San Valentin, and how the week is bought (a stem list from last year's sales and the stock counted, with a top price per stem) and how the peaks are bought (roses booked with the grower to the bouquets ordered with a deposit); the Dia de la Madre and the wedding season, and how the flower is conditioned and kept (within the hour, in the cold, a professional insecticide only by a carne holder) and how weddings are taken (quoted from an escandallo, with a deposit and a cap per Saturday); a heatwave and a cheaper shop across the street, and how prices are set (from the escandallo) and what is done with the flower of day three (a ladder by days, never a drooping flower sold as of the day); and Todos los Santos, and how it is staffed and produced (two temporary florists and a production plan) and how the year is recorded (a merma record with its causes).

Two critical errors cap the round: a professional insecticide used without the carne and a drooping flower sold as of the day. KPIs: flower sold without merma, controllable cost, stock-outs per 1,000 customers and customer complaints. Lesson: peaks are won by buying ahead and lost in merma. Spanish primary, English parity. Fictional shop, company and people; real curriculum and Spanish rules cited.

What participants learn

After the session, participants will be able to:

  • Calculate the week's auction purchase from a stem list built on last year's sales of the same week and the stock counted, with a top price per stem, and explain why waste and stock-outs are two sides of one purchase
  • Evaluate booking peak flower ahead with a grower against the bouquets already ordered with a deposit, and explain why buying the peak in its own week is dear and imprecise
  • Apply the rules of the trade: condition each delivery within the hour and keep it cold, leave professional plant-protection products to the licence holder and quote every wedding from its cost sheet with a deposit
  • Analyze a cost sheet to set the price with a multiplier and a ladder by days in the shop, without ever selling a drooping flower as fresh
  • Plan staff and production for the Todos los Santos peak and design a waste record by variety, day and cause that drives next year's stem list

Prerequisites

  • Conditioning cut flower in the workshop

Who it is for

An introductory simulation that assumes no prior knowledge of the subject, designed for undergraduate courses. It also works in vocational and high-school programmes and in onboarding sessions.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: lunes 11 de enero, 8:30: la compra de la semana y los picos.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • Cómo se compra la semana en la subasta
  • Cómo se compran los picos (San Valentín primero)
  • Cómo se acondiciona y se conserva la flor
  • Cómo se aceptan las bodas
  • Cómo se ponen los precios
  • Qué se hace con la flor del tercer y quinto día
  • Cómo se organiza Todos los Santos
  • Cómo se registra el año
