About this simulation

A 90-minute, 4-round basic Express simulation for Spanish vocational training (Formacion Profesional), module 0084 Comercializacion y logistica en la industria alimentaria, shared by the Tecnico Superior en Procesos y Calidad en la Industria Alimentaria (Real Decreto 451/2010) and the Tecnico Superior en Vitivinicultura (Real Decreto 1688/2007).

The learner is Nerea Castrillo, a newly qualified food-process technician who runs the channels and the logistics of a fictional olive-oil packer in Alcaudete (Jaen) through 2027: bulk oil bought from cooperatives at a volatile price, bottled under its own brand and a supermarket chain's private label, and sold through the chain, horeca distributors, the shops and export.

Four situations set the year's course: a year in which most litres went to the chain at a thin margin, and how the bulk oil is bought (written contracts with a price formula, signed before the deliveries) and through which channels the litres are sold (a mix set by the margin and the risk of each channel); Easter, and how the promotions are agreed (in writing, priced on the margin) and how the stock is kept (by campaign and best-before date, the oldest out first); a summer of rising bulk prices and late orders, and how the orders are served (an order plan with safety stock by channel) and how the prices follow the bulk price (the revision clauses applied with figures); and the change of campaign, and how the old oil leaves the warehouse (sold before its date, every lot as what it is) and how the year is accounted (a channel account with the margin per litre of every channel).

Two critical errors cap the round: the bulk oil bought on a handshake with the price settled later, and a lot the tasting panel downgraded sold as virgen extra. KPIs: sales with margin, controllable cost, order lines late or incomplete per 1,000 and thousand litres expired or immobilised. Lesson: each channel has its margin and its risk, and the mix decides the result. Spanish primary, English parity.

Fictional company, brand and people; real curriculum and rules cited.

What participants learn

After the session, participants will be able to:

  • Apply a written purchase contract for bulk raw material with monthly volumes, lot-by-lot quality checks and a market-linked price between a floor and a ceiling, and explain why it protects every channel's margin
  • Evaluate private label, horeca, retail shops and export by the margin per litre and the risk each brings, and build a channel mix in which no single buyer can sink the year
  • Calculate what a promotion costs per litre and the extra volume it must sell to pay for itself, and rotate stock by campaign and best-before date with the oldest out first
  • Analyze late and incomplete orders to replace express lorries with an order plan and a safety stock per channel, and apply price-revision clauses with figures when the bulk price rises
  • Design a year-end channel account with the margin per litre of every channel and customer, and use it to plan the next campaign, including how old-campaign and downgraded lots are sold under their true category

Who it is for

An introductory simulation that assumes no prior knowledge of the subject, designed for undergraduate courses. It also works in vocational and high-school programmes and in onboarding sessions.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: lunes 18 de enero, 9:00: las compras y los canales.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • Cómo se compra el aceite a granel
  • Por qué canales se venden los litros
  • Cómo se pactan las promociones
  • Cómo se lleva el stock
  • Cómo se sirven los pedidos
  • Cómo siguen los precios al granel
  • Cómo sale el aceite de la campaña anterior
  • Cómo se hace la cuenta del año
