About this simulation

A 90-minute, 4-round basic Express simulation on the decision a high-school senior in a Career and Technical Education program faces after graduation, followed for ten years: comparing a registered apprenticeship, a four-year campus, a two-year technical degree and a job with no training program on a ten-year table of cost, pay, borrowing, credential and the risk of not finishing; reading an apprenticeship agreement (29 CFR 29.7: term, graduated wage scale, paid related instruction, probationary period) and a financial-aid offer before signing; paying for the first year with the FAFSA, grants and federal Direct Loans within the first-year limit; holding the path through a slow winter and stacking credentials that count (EPA Section 608, credit toward an associate degree); and, at year nine, buying what the pay can carry and taking the step that keeps options open, for high-school CTE post-secondary planning, career-readiness and personal-finance courses, with registered apprenticeship, EPA Section 608 and the Wisconsin HVAC Qualifier named as hooks.

Lena Thao, 17, is a fictional senior in the HVAC/R program of the fictional Ledgeview Ridge High School in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, choosing in March 2027 and followed to 2037.

Round by round you decide which path to take and how to compare the paths, how to read the papers and how to pay for the first year, what to do with a slow winter and which credentials to add, and what to drive and what the next step is; at each decision point the ten-year plan is projected again with the decisions taken so far.

Each round is scored on the expected year-ten pay, the money borrowed over ten years, the path risk, the ten-year net worth and the options kept open, with open violations shown alongside; a loan whose payments pass 20% of gross monthly pay, the plan rule the sim states, caps the score. English with Spanish.

What participants learn

After the session, participants will be able to:

  • Compare a registered apprenticeship, a four-year degree, a two-year technical degree and a job on a ten-year table of cost, pay, borrowing, credential and the risk of not finishing
  • Examine an apprenticeship agreement and a financial-aid offer for the term, the wage scale, paid related instruction, the probationary period, grants versus loans and any training-repayment clause
  • Plan a career path that keeps options open by stacking credentials that transfer and choosing next steps that build on them
  • Apply a debt threshold to pay for a path by filing the FAFSA, taking grants and federal loans within their limits and refusing any loan whose payments pass 20% of gross monthly pay
  • Decide how to hold a path through a setback with an emergency fund, the coordinator and the classes kept, instead of quitting for a job that pays more this month

Who it is for

An introductory simulation that assumes no prior knowledge of the subject, designed for undergraduate courses. It also works in vocational and high-school programmes and in onboarding sessions.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: 9 March 2027: the path and the comparison.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • Which path
  • How the paths are compared
  • How the papers are read
  • How the first year is paid for
  • What you do with the slow winter
  • Which credentials you stack
  • What you drive
  • The next step
