About this simulation

A 90-minute, 4-round basic Express simulation on consumer product classifications (convenience, shopping, specialty and impulse goods and services) for US high-school Career and Technical Education marketing courses (Arizona Marketing Technical Standard 3.4) and introductory business classes.

Copper Basin Variety (a fictional family variety store in Prescott Valley, Arizona) moves into a building three times its size: as the merchandising assistant on a DECA co-op placement, you sort the moving list into classes and then merchandise the new floor class by class: where the staples go, how shoppers compare phones and jeans, where impulse items sit, how the exclusive silver jewelry and custom boots are shown, what the fall circular promotes and what the holiday order stocks.

At the end you write the one-page memo that explains the classes, services included, to the seasonal hires. Scored on profit, customer satisfaction, class literacy, and compliance with US rules on bait advertising, former-price claims, imitation stones and fire exits.

Who it is for

An introductory simulation that assumes no prior knowledge of the subject, designed for undergraduate courses. It also works in vocational and high-school programmes and in onboarding sessions.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: Monday 1 March 2027: the sort and convenience goods.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • Sort of the 32 products (Part 1)
  • Convenience goods
  • Shopping goods
  • Impulse goods
  • Specialty goods (Sky Mesa and Bradshaw)
  • Fall circular
  • Holiday order
  • Memo for the seasonal hires (Part 2)
