About this simulation

A 90-minute, 4-round basic Express simulation for Spanish vocational training (Formacion Profesional), module 0684 Operacion y mantenimiento de parques eolicos of the Tecnico Superior en Energias Renovables (Real Decreto 385/2011).

The learner is Ziortza Lapuyade, a newly qualified O&M technician of a fictional wind-farm O&M contractor, through 2027, in charge of the twenty-two turbines of a mountain wind farm with one gearbox model.

Four situations set the year's course: the gearbox alarm (bearing temperature and a CMS vibration warning) that keeps coming back on a windy night, and what happens to the turbine (stopped from the SCADA and kept stopped) and how the diagnosis starts (the SCADA trends, the CMS spectra, the oil particle counter and the history read before anyone climbs); the climb to the nacelle before the wind rises, and how it is done (the work permit, the manufacturer's wind limits and the forecast, the rotor locked, two technicians and the rescue kit) and what is inspected (an oil sample, the borescope and the magnetic plug before anything is ordered); the repair in the calm summer window (the bearing replaced up-tower, a crane only if needed) and the fleet (the same gearbox model reviewed on the other turbines); and how the turbine returns to service (the safety chain tested and the run-up supervised before a written hand-back) and how each intervention is recorded.

Three critical errors cap the round: an alarm inhibited and its threshold raised to keep producing, a climb alone with the rotor unlocked, a restart with a bridge in the safety chain. KPIs: technical availability, O&M cost, MWh lost per alarm and risk situations at height. Spanish primary, English parity. Fictional wind farm, company and people; real law (Ley 31/1995) and curriculum cited.

What participants learn

After the session, participants will be able to:

  • Decide to stop a turbine whose gearbox alarms on temperature and vibration in a controlled way from the SCADA, keep the alarm and trends, inform the park manager and leave the restart to the diagnosis
  • Analyze SCADA temperature trends against power and wind, vibration spectra against the turbine's baseline, oil particle counts and history, and write hypotheses down before anyone climbs
  • Prepare a climb with the work permit, the manufacturer's wind limits and the forecast for the whole job, rotor locked, energy locked out, two climbers with the rescue kit and the control centre informed
  • Decide the repair from an oil sample, borescope and magnetic plug before ordering parts or a crane, replacing the bearing up-tower in the calm window and reviewing the same gearbox model across the park
  • Plan the return to service: safety chain tested, every alarm back at its threshold, run-up supervised, turbine handed back in writing and an intervention report the next technician can read

Who it is for

An introductory simulation that assumes no prior knowledge of the subject, designed for undergraduate courses. It also works in vocational and high-school programmes and in onboarding sessions.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: jueves 14 de enero, 5:40: la alarma de multiplicadora en una noche de viento.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • Qué pasa con el aerogenerador 07
  • Cómo empieza el diagnóstico
  • Cómo se hace la subida
  • Qué se inspecciona en la góndola
  • Cómo se repara el aerogenerador 07
  • Qué se hace con el resto de la flota
  • Cómo vuelve al servicio
  • Cómo se cierra cada intervención
