About this simulation

A 90-minute, 4-round basic Express simulation for Spanish vocational training (Formacion Profesional), module 0586 Gestion de recursos de vestuario a medida of the Tecnico Superior en Vestuario a medida y de espectaculos (Real Decreto 1679/2011), also usable in modules 0587 Vestuario de espectaculos and 0592 Proyecto de vestuario a medida y espectaculos of the same title.

The learner is Lucia Valdelosa, a newly qualified costume technician who runs the budgets, the buying and the plan of a fictional theatre costume and tailoring workshop in Salamanca through 2027: costumes for theatre, zarzuela, dance and musical productions and some made-to-measure suits, always from the designer's figurines and each performer's measurements, for premieres that do not move.

Four situations set the year's course: a musical's tour of 140 costumes at 25% below the rate and commissions arriving without figurines, and which commissions are accepted (against the workroom's hours, with signed figurines and measurements) and how they are budgeted (from the escandallo of each garment); a year of fabric on offer, a warehouse lot for cash with no invoice and stock-outs of lining, and how the fabrics are bought (for each production, with an invoice) and what dates are promised (backwards from the premiere, fitting by fitting); a designer's changes after signature, retouches and missed fittings, and how the changes are handled (priced and signed as an addendum before cutting) and how the costumes are fitted (two fittings, the measurements kept in the workshop's file); and the Christmas quarter, and how it is staffed (one temporary oficiala, the commissions closed by date) and how the year is recorded (a workshop record with its causes).

Two critical errors cap the round: a cash payment of 3,400 euros with no invoice and the performers' measurements and photos in an open WhatsApp group. KPIs: garments on time, controllable cost, retouched pieces per 1,000 and client complaints. Lesson: budgeting the commission well is half the workshop's margin. Spanish primary, English parity. Fictional workshop, company and people; real curriculum and rules cited.

What participants learn

After the session, participants will be able to:

  • Evaluate which commissions to accept against the weekly hours of the cutting table and the sewing room, each with signed figurines, measurements and fitting dates, declining the rest in writing
  • Calculate a commission budget from each garment's cost sheet: metres, trimmings, hours by type, fittings, dyeing and contingency, and explain what a flat price per costume does to the margin
  • Plan purchases and dates backwards from the premiere, fitting by fitting, buying fabric from the cost sheet's list from suppliers who invoice and refusing a cash lot with no invoice
  • Apply change control and data care: every change after signature priced as a new budget signed before cutting, two fittings per costume, every claim recorded and performers' measurements and photos restricted
  • Design a workshop record comparing each budget with its real hours, and plan the Christmas quarter with one temporary seamstress and a closing date

Prerequisites

  • Cutting and sewing garments, from the title's other modules

Who it is for

An introductory simulation that assumes no prior knowledge of the subject, designed for undergraduate courses. It also works in vocational and high-school programmes and in onboarding sessions.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: lunes 11 de enero, 9:00: los encargos y los presupuestos.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • Qué encargos se aceptan, y cómo entran
  • Cómo se presupuesta cada encargo
  • Cómo se compran los tejidos
  • Qué fechas se prometen
  • Cómo se tratan los cambios
  • Cómo se prueba y revisa cada traje
  • Cómo se organiza la Navidad
  • Cómo se registra el año
