About this simulation

A 90-minute, 4-round basic Express simulation on construction job-site safety from an apprentice's seat: walking a site for the Focus Four hazards (falls, struck-by, caught-in/between and electrocution), reporting hazards the same day, choosing controls by the hierarchy of controls, fall protection at 6 feet and cave-in protection in trenches, reporting a near miss without blame, tagging out a damaged cord on temporary power, stopping exposed work respectfully and leading a toolbox talk that raises reporting, for high-school Career and Technical Education in construction, carpentry and the building trades, pre-apprenticeship programs and courses preparing the OSHA Outreach 10-hour Construction card.

Brianna Eskew, 18, a fictional first-year carpentry apprentice with Front Range Framing & General, walks Ponderosa Flats, a five-storey wood-frame apartment building in Denver, Colorado, every Monday of April 2027.

Round by round you decide how to walk the site and what to do about an open edge, how to control that edge and a 6-foot trench, how to answer a near miss and a damaged cord, and what to do when a journeyman works at the edge without fall protection and how to run the crew's toolbox talk; at each decision point the month is projected again with the decisions taken so far.

Each round is scored on the hazards found and fixed, serious-injury exposure, crew hours lost and the crew's safety culture, with open violations shown alongside; leaving an edge with only tape or a sign, sending people into the trench without a protective system or leaving a worker exposed at the edge (29 CFR 1926.501 and 1926.652) caps the score when OSHA visits. English with Spanish.

Who it is for

An introductory simulation that assumes no prior knowledge of the subject, designed for undergraduate courses. It also works in vocational and high-school programmes and in onboarding sessions.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: Monday 5 April 2027: the first walk.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • How you walk the site
  • What you do about the open edge on level 4
  • The permanent answer for the level-4 edge
  • The 6-foot trench
  • The bundle of studs that missed Andrés
  • The damaged cord on level 2
  • Ray at the level-5 edge without fall protection
  • Friday's toolbox talk
