About this simulation

A 90-minute, 4-round basic Express simulation for Spanish vocational training (Formacion Profesional), module 0968 Integracion de sistemas de automatizacion industrial of the Tecnico Superior en Automatizacion y Robotica Industrial (Real Decreto 1581/2011) and module 0943 Integracion de sistemas of the Tecnico Superior en Mecatronica Industrial (Real Decreto 1576/2011).

The learner is Leire Arizkorreta, a newly qualified commissioning technician at a fictional metal-stamping plant, Troqueles Valdebrena, between October 2027 and March 2028, commissioning a robot cell that loads a riveting press (six-axis robot, conveyor with a frequency drive, PLC, industrial Ethernet fieldbus, safety relay, HMI and SCADA).

Four situations set the cell's course: the cell wired with the robot not yet in automatic, and how the safety functions are validated (each one tested against the risk assessment and signed) and how the signals are checked (against the I/O list and the drawings); the robot's first collision and the drive that drops off the network, and how the robot's first motions are made (manual at reduced speed) and what is done with the network (its diagnostics read); the robot waiting at the press without an alarm, and how the sequence is diagnosed (both programs in monitoring with the handshake table) and how the SCADA is built (on the machine states); and the site acceptance test and the change control after the handover.

Three critical errors (safety overrides) cap the round: a fence door interlock bridged, the robot's collision detection and safe zones disabled, a signal forced in the PLC. KPIs: OEE of the cell, commissioning cost, minutes stopped per fault and robot collisions. Spanish primary, English parity. Fictional companies and people; real regulations, standards and curriculum cited.

What participants learn

After the session, participants will be able to:

  • Validate every safety function of a robot cell from its risk assessment before automatic running, testing each as a chain from device to stop and recording the result for the person who signs it
  • Check every signal before the program runs by actuating each input in the field and seeing it in the PLC and on the HMI, checking each output with its actuator isolated and marking differences on the drawings
  • Teach a robot's first motions in manual at reduced speed with the enabling device and read the fieldbus diagnostics to find the failing link, never disabling collision detection or widening safe zones
  • Design SCADA alarms and OEE on machine states so they show where the time goes, after finding a missing PLC-robot handshake signal by monitoring both programs online with the interface table
  • Plan a site acceptance that re-validates the safety functions after changes, closes or assigns open items and hands over backups, and a change control that records, re-tests and signs every later change

Who it is for

An introductory simulation that assumes no prior knowledge of the subject, designed for undergraduate courses. It also works in vocational and high-school programmes and in onboarding sessions.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: lunes 4 de octubre, 7:30: la célula cableada y el robot aún sin moverse en automático.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • Cómo se validan las funciones de seguridad
  • Cómo se comprueban las señales
  • Cómo se hacen los primeros movimientos del robot
  • Qué se hace con la red
  • Cómo se diagnostica la secuencia
  • Cómo se construye el SCADA
  • Cómo se hace la recepción
  • Cómo se cambian los programas después
