About this simulation

A 90-minute, 4-round Express simulation on multi-state sales tax and returns for a growing US online brand: economic nexus after South Dakota v.

Wayfair and voluntary disclosure, tax calculation by product and address, marketplace facilitator laws and the marketplace-versus-own-store choice, resale certificates for wholesale accounts, the returns policy and what happens to returned goods, a state's nexus letter and holiday prices set on each channel's contribution with the tax shown before checkout.

For accounting, taxation, e-commerce and small-business programmes at Hispanic-Serving Institutions. Bilingual EN/ES.

Hilo Dorado (a fictional embroidered-apparel brand in Chula Vista, California, that sells into all fifty states): as Damaris, the new operations and finance lead, you decide where the brand owes sales tax and how it is calculated, the role of the marketplace and what to ask of the boutiques, the returns policy and the returned goods, and how to answer the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue and price the holidays.

Scored on operating profit, sales-tax exposure, the return rate, net sales and customer trust.
