About this simulation

Mortalidad anomala en acuicultura (Fish Mortality Event). Spanish vocational training (FP), Maritimo-Pesquera family: module 1020 Tecnicas analiticas y metodos de control sanitario en acuicultura of the Tecnico Superior en Acuicultura (grado superior, Real Decreto 1585/2011).

The learner is Ainhoa Ezquerra, a newly qualified production and fish health technician at a fictional rainbow trout farm in the Leon mountains, when daily mortality in four raceways jumps from 0.05 % to 0.8 % in a summer heatwave.

Four rounds, one outbreak: the morning dead (dying fish with signs plus a healthy control sent chilled, not the overnight dead; oxygen, temperature and ammonia per raceway with the daily mortality curve), the first results (a Yersinia ruckeri isolate read together with signs, water and curve while the viral PCR for VHS and IHN, both notifiable, is pending; the abnormal mortality reported to the official veterinary services and live movements stopped), the treatment (florfenicol medicated feed on veterinary prescription after the antibiogram, only in the affected raceways, with lower density, an adjusted ration and aeration) and the sale (the withdrawal period counted in degree-days from the logged water temperature; the treatment record closed and an early-sampling protocol written).

Eight four-option decisions scored on diagnostic accuracy, blind days, avoidable losses and compliance; three critical errors cap the round at 40: shipping live fish during an unexplained abnormal mortality without notifying, using an antimicrobial without a veterinary prescription, and selling treated fish before the withdrawal period is met. Lesson: sampling well at the start saves weeks of blind treatment.

Training level only: decision practice that complements supervised practical training; it gives no doses and the prescription figures are stylised case values. Fictional farm, laboratory, customers, people and figures. Spanish player-facing strings with full English parity.

What participants learn

After the session, participants will be able to:

  • Select and send the sample a laboratory can answer from, dying fish with signs from the affected units plus a healthy control, chilled and with a note, and record water quality per unit next to the daily mortality curve
  • Analyze clinical signs, bacteriology, water readings and the mortality curve together before closing a diagnosis, and keep a notifiable viral disease open until the test that rules it out is in
  • Apply the duty to notify an unexplained abnormal mortality by reporting it to the veterinarian and the official veterinary services, and stop live movements until the cause is known
  • Evaluate treatment options under prudent antimicrobial use and justify, with figures from their own play, why the drug prescribed after the antibiogram and given only where needed beats both the leftover premix and blanket medication
  • Design the close of the episode: count the withdrawal period in degree-days from the logged temperature before any sale, keep the treatment record and write the sampling protocol for the next outbreak

Who it is for

An intermediate simulation for participants who already know the core concepts of the subject, designed for master's and MBA programmes.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: Lunes 12 de julio, 7:30: los muertos de la mañana.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • Qué muestreas para el laboratorio
  • Qué registras del agua y de la mortalidad
  • Cómo lees los signos y las analíticas
  • Qué haces con la mortalidad anormal y el lote
  • Qué tratamiento aplicas
  • Cómo acompañas el tratamiento
  • Cuándo sale el lote a la venta
  • Cómo cierras el episodio
