About this simulation

A 90-minute, 4-round basic Express simulation for Spanish vocational training (Formacion Profesional), module 0113 Operaciones de generacion y transferencia de energia en proceso quimico of the Tecnico en Planta Quimica (Real Decreto 178/2008) and module 0187 Generacion y recuperacion de energia of the Tecnico Superior en Quimica Industrial (Real Decreto 175/2008).

The learner is Sabela Outeiro, a newly qualified boiler operator of a fictional resins plant, through 2027, at a fire-tube steam boiler with a modulating gas burner, its gauge glass, level transmitter and low-water cut-offs, feed pumps, blowdowns, economiser and condensate return.

Four situations set the year's course: a cut-off that keeps tripping during a cold start, and how the level and its safety devices are checked (gauge glass blown down, cut-offs tested, never bypassed) and how the boiler is started (full pre-purge, low fire, the maker's warm-up curve); repeated flame failures and high boiler-water conductivity, and what is done after a lockout (the cause first and a full pre-purge before every relight) and how the boiler is blown down (on the water analysis); the restart after the August stop, and how the demand step is met (anticipated, the main valve opened slowly) and what is done with the economiser and the condensate; and a night when no water can be seen in the gauge glass, answered by cutting the burner and not feeding water to a hot boiler, and how the year's events are recorded.

Three critical errors cap the round: the low-water cut-off bypassed, the burner reset again and again without a full purge, the burner kept on and feed water opened with no visible level. KPIs: steam demand served, boiler house operating cost, energy lost a week and boiler trips and incidents. Lesson: with low water, the right sequence prevents the explosion. Spanish primary, English parity.

Fictional plant, companies and people; real curriculum cited.

What participants learn

After the session, participants will be able to:

  • Check the boiler level and its safety devices before firing, blowing down the gauge glass, comparing it with the transmitter and testing the low-water cut-offs without ever bypassing them
  • Apply the cold-start sequence of a fire-tube boiler: a full pre-purge, ignition at low fire and the warm-up on the maker's curve with vents and drains open
  • Diagnose the cause of a flame failure before any reset, and relight only after a full pre-purge
  • Evaluate blowdown, load changes and heat recovery on their figures, blowing down on the water analysis, anticipating the demand step and returning the economiser and the condensate to service with a plan
  • Decide to treat a low water confirmed by two indications as real: cut the burner, never feed water to a hot boiler with no visible level, isolate, cool and inspect, and record every event in the boiler log

Prerequisites

  • Has seen a boiler and knows the gauge glass, cut-off, burner, pre-purge and blowdown

Who it is for

An introductory simulation that assumes no prior knowledge of the subject, designed for undergraduate courses. It also works in vocational and high-school programmes and in onboarding sessions.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: lunes 11 de enero, 5:30: el limitador que dispara y el arranque en frío.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • Cómo se comprueban el nivel y sus seguridades
  • Cómo se arranca la caldera en frío
  • Qué se hace tras un fallo de llama
  • Cómo se purga la caldera
  • Cómo se atiende el escalón de demanda
  • Qué se hace con la recuperación de calor
  • Cómo se responde a un nivel bajo confirmado
  • Cómo se registran los sucesos del año
