About this simulation

A 90-minute, 4-round basic Express simulation for Spanish vocational training (Formacion Profesional, grado superior), module 0349 Eficiencia energetica de instalaciones of the Tecnico Superior en Eficiencia Energetica y Energia Solar Termica.

You are Lucia Rabanera, junior technician of a fictional engineering consultancy hired for the energy retrofit of a 1985 warehouse-and-office building of 2,400 m2 in the province of Burgos, heated by a diesel boiler that has to be replaced anyway.

Through 2027 you decide the envelope (roof insulation and air sealing, patching, SATE with new windows, or new windows only) and the heat generator (a heat pump sized after the envelope, a new diesel boiler, a gas condensing boiler or a heat pump sized on the old load); lighting (LED with presence and daylight control, LED tubes as they fail, LED without control, or a lit facade) and pumps and fans (variable-speed drives, nothing, time clocks or new fixed-speed motors); solar (PV sized for self-consumption, none, the whole roof, or solar thermal) and the grant (apply before contracting, none, apply after starting, or backdate the contract); and setpoints and ventilation and the follow-up after the works.

Each round is scored on the first year of operation and a 15-year net present value: final energy saved, CO2 avoided, NPV, simple payback and comfort, with the net investment and breaches shown but not scored. Ranking the measures by return, not by visibility, multiplies the saving of every euro. Backdating the contract to obtain the grant, or closing the outdoor air, caps the score (Regulation (EU) 651/2014 art.

6(2); Ley 38/2003 art. 37.1 a); RITE IT 1.1.4.2). Spanish with English.

Who it is for

An introductory simulation that assumes no prior knowledge of the subject, designed for undergraduate courses. It also works in vocational and high-school programmes and in onboarding sessions.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: Lunes 11 de enero de 2027: la envolvente y el generador.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • La envolvente
  • El generador de calor
  • La iluminación
  • Bombas y ventiladores
  • La solar
  • La ayuda
  • Consignas y ventilación
  • Después de las obras
