About this simulation

Incendio en un edificio (Structure Fire).

Spanish vocational training (FP), grado medio and grado superior: module 1530 Intervencion operativa en extincion de incendios urbanos of the Tecnico en Emergencias y Proteccion Civil (Real Decreto 907/2013, de 22 de noviembre) and module 1507 Supervision de la intervencion en operaciones de incendios urbanos y emergencias ordinarias of the Tecnico Superior en Coordinacion de Emergencias y Proteccion Civil (Real Decreto 906/2013, de 22 de noviembre).

Rocio Bermejal, 31, corporal and crew leader of the fictional Monteralbo Fire and Rescue Service, is first on scene at a night fire in a closed furniture shop on the ground floor of a five-storey block of flats, with smoke in the stairwell and two residents at a window.

Four rounds, each an action and a reading, residents, air or report choice: how the crew sizes up the scene and what it reads in the smoke; how the shop is opened and what is done with the residents; what the crew does about the signs of a flashover inside and how the breathing-apparatus air is controlled; how the fire is declared out and the report.

Scored on an index of the safety of residents and crew, minutes of delay in rescue and control, avoidable damage after what a good choice avoids, and a coordination index.

Three hard-fails cap the round at 40: opening all at once a closed shop showing signs of running short of air, keeping on advancing when the smoke warns that the whole room may ignite, and declaring the fire out without checking where it may still be hiding. The lesson: reading the smoke before opening the door saves the crew.

Deterministic expected values; fictional service, building and people; training-level decision practice that complements, and never replaces, supervised practical training and the service's own procedures.

What participants learn

After the session, participants will be able to:

  • Analyze a structure fire before acting by going round the building and asking the caller, and read the smoke's volume, speed, density and colour with the glass and the door rather than colour alone
  • Open a ventilation-limited room a little, from cover, with a charged line and the smoke cooled, and protect residents in place behind a shut door while reaching those at risk by ladder
  • Decide how to answer flashover signs by stopping, cooling the smoke layer and telling command without abandoning a winnable interior attack, and control breathing-apparatus air with an exit margin
  • Declare a fire out only on verification, checking ceilings, shafts and the flats above with a thermal camera, airing the building and handing over before packing up
  • Argue with figures from the play why the most decisive-looking and most cautious-looking options are rarely the best, and write the report that reaches training and the next crew

Prerequisites

  • Knows hose lines, breathing apparatus and the fire triangle

Who it is for

An intermediate simulation for participants who already know the core concepts of the subject, designed for master's and MBA programmes.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: Jueves 18 de febrero, 03:09: la llegada y el humo.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • Cómo haces el reconocimiento
  • Qué lees en el humo y en el local
  • Cómo abres el local
  • Qué haces con los vecinos
  • Qué haces ante los signos
  • Cómo se controla el aire
  • Cómo das por terminada la extinción
  • Qué informe haces
