About this simulation

A 90-minute, 4-round Express simulation on running the P&L of a US family retail store, for small-business management, entrepreneurship and introductory accounting and finance courses at Hispanic-Serving Institutions, SBDC workshops and continuing education. Bilingual EN/ES.

Hinojosa Hardware & Home (a fictional hardware store in Pharr, Texas, with nine employees and about 2.5 million dollars of sales): as the new owner you run the store through 2027.

You set the price architecture against a new big-box competitor and the sales-tax routine, choose the supplier terms (2/10 net 30) and the credit policy for contractors, stock for the storm season and choose how to take cards, and fund the October cash low and decide what the owner takes out. Scored on profit before the owner pay, cash at the October low, tax and legal compliance, customers kept and gross margin.

Who it is for

An intermediate simulation for participants who already know the core concepts of the subject, designed for master's and MBA programmes.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: Monday 4 January 2027: the price list and the sales tax.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • How the store prices
  • The sales-tax routine
  • Valle Grande’s terms
  • Credit to customers
  • The storm stock
  • Taking cards
