About this simulation

Incendio forestal: brigada (Wildland Fire Crew). Spanish vocational training (FP), grado medio: module 1529 Vigilancia e intervencion operativa en incendios forestales of the Tecnico en Emergencias y Proteccion Civil (Real Decreto 907/2013). The learner is Noelia Carrascosa, leader of a ground crew of a fictional wildland fire service, at a fire climbing a pine slope on a hot August afternoon.

Four rounds, four phases of one fire: arrival and reading the fire (size-up, lookout and anchor; fuel, wind, humidity, slope and the forecast wind shift), the attack and the escape route (flank attack from an anchor with one foot in the black; an escape route walked and timed to a safe place), the wind shift with spot fires below the crew (out to the black, headcount, report and replan; lookout and open radio), and mop-up and the report.

Eight four-option decisions scored on the safety of the crew, delay to control, avoidable burnt area in hectares and the coordination of the response; three critical errors cap the round at 40: attacking without an escape route to a safe place, keeping on working when the wind shifts with fire below the crew, and leaving the perimeter without mop-up.

Lesson: without an escape route and a safe place, nobody attacks the fire. Training level only: decision practice that complements supervised practical training; fictional service, places and people; no real operational figures. Spanish player-facing strings with full English parity.

What participants learn

After the session, participants will be able to:

  • Analyze a wildland fire before committing the crew: view it from a high point, post a lookout, find an anchor and read fuel, wind, humidity, slope and the forecast wind shift rather than flame height
  • Attack along the flank from an anchor with one foot in the black, never starting without an escape route walked, timed to a safe zone and told to everyone
  • Decide how to answer a change in the fire: withdraw by the escape route, count the crew, inform command and replan, keeping the lookout, the open channel and the crew count that make the route usable
  • Mop up a band of the perimeter and leave a watch crew before the next wind, neither trusting the absence of flames nor spending a night of water on everything
  • Argue with figures from the play why the most decisive-looking and most cautious-looking options are rarely the best, and write the report that reaches training and the next crew

Prerequisites

  • Knows hand tools, the fire engine and the fire triangle

Who it is for

An intermediate simulation for participants who already know the core concepts of the subject, designed for master's and MBA programmes.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: Martes 10 de agosto, 14:32: la llegada y la lectura del fuego.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • Cómo haces el reconocimiento
  • Qué lees en el fuego
  • Cómo atacas el fuego
  • Ruta de escape y lugar seguro
  • Qué hace la brigada ante el cambio
  • Observación y comunicaciones
  • Cómo se liquida el perímetro
  • Qué informe haces
