About this simulation

A family farm with 200 hectares of irrigated grain maize in the central valley of Chile builds a climate-adaptation portfolio over four seasons: a dry decade, a La Nina drought, a heat-wave summer and a wet El Nino year.

As farm manager, the participant chooses the hybrid mix between a high-yield traditional hybrid and a drought- and heat-tolerant one, a second growing region on a lease in the south, and a parametric insurance cover that pays on the canal delivery index; decides whether to install drip irrigation with own funds or through the irrigation-subsidy call, how to use scarce water in the drought, and whether to buy water from a well without rights; then sequences a second adaptation investment and decides on water rights for the next decade.

The model is deterministic: yield follows the share of the water requirement met and heat, the index cover pays on the index and not on the loss, premiums rise after warnings and payments, and cash carries credit-line interest. The score combines the quality of each decision with margin, liquidity and the change in net worth, and is capped for using water without a right or breaking the credit line.

Spanish (primary) and English.

Who it is for

An intermediate simulation for participants who already know the core concepts of the subject, designed for master's and MBA programmes.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • Mezcla de híbridos (contrato por 2026-27 y 2027-28)
  • Segunda zona: arriendo en San Carlos, Ñuble (tres temporadas)
  • Seguro paramétrico 2026-27 (suma asegurada $300 M)
  • Riego por goteo en 100 hectáreas
