About this simulation

A 90-minute, 4-round basic Express simulation for Spanish vocational training (Formacion Profesional), grado superior, module 1414 Riesgos quimicos y biologicos ambientales of the Tecnico Superior en Prevencion de riesgos profesionales (Real Decreto 958/2024).

The learner is Ainhoa Barranquero, a newly qualified prevention technician hired by a fictional industrial paint shop, Lacados Valdemirto, which paints parts of agricultural machinery with solvent primers (toluene, xylene) and a 2K polyurethane topcoat with a diisocyanate hardener.

Four situations set the paint shop's course in 2027: the 2023 report of a single fixed sampler, and how the agents and the exposures are characterised (safety data sheets, tasks, similar exposure groups) and the sampling planned (personal samples in the breathing zone, UNE-EN 689); the laboratory's results, and how they are read against the VLA-ED (the additive index of the solvent mixture, the preliminary test by group, never the mean of the nave) and how the diisocyanates are handled (sensitisers, the REACH training restriction, spraying only in the booth); a heat wave, and which measures come first under the order of priority of Real Decreto 374/2001 (substitution, capture at source, organisation, then personal protective equipment) and how cleaning and handling are done; and the annual review of how the control is kept alive and how each evaluation is closed with the results told to the workers and their delegate.

Eliminating or substituting pays more than the best personal protective equipment. Scored on the shifts below the limit, the cost of the measures, the residual exposure and the non-conformities; training-level decision practice that complements the module's supervised practical work and the company's own evaluation.

Two critical safety errors cap the round at 40: the diisocyanate topcoat sprayed outside the booth with FFP2 masks, and a worker sent inside a tank with thinner. Spanish primary, English parity.

What participants learn

After the session, participants will be able to:

  • Analyze a workshop's chemical agents and exposures before measuring: an inventory from safety data sheets and labels, sensitisers and carcinogens flagged, and workers grouped into similar exposure groups
  • Design a sampling strategy that measures what workers breathe: personal breathing-zone samples over the shift, on representative days, by group and enough for the UNE-EN 689 preliminary test
  • Evaluate measurement results against limit values, adding agents with the same effects, testing each group on its own and reading one result above the limit as non-compliance
  • Apply the priority order of preventive measures: substitution first, then isolation and capture at source, work organisation, and protective equipment as a complement, treating diisocyanates as sensitisers
  • Plan how to keep exposure control alive with periodic measurements, extraction checks, new products vetted before purchase and results shared with the workers and their delegate

Who it is for

An introductory simulation that assumes no prior knowledge of the subject, designed for undergraduate courses. It also works in vocational and high-school programmes and in onboarding sessions.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: lunes 1 de febrero, 8:30: el informe de 2023.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • Cómo se caracterizan los agentes y las exposiciones
  • Cómo se planifica el muestreo
  • Cómo se leen los resultados
  • Cómo se trabaja con los diisocianatos
  • Qué medidas van primero
  • Cómo se hacen la limpieza y la manipulación
  • Cómo se mantiene vivo el control
  • Cómo se cierra cada evaluación
