About this simulation

A 90-minute, 4-round basic Express simulation on buying a first car and owning it for a year, for high-school personal finance and Career and Technical Education (finance, transportation and the construction trades), driver-education, workforce and adult-education programs.

Jalen Haskett, 18, a fictional first-year HVAC apprentice in Dayton, Ohio, needs a car to reach job sites and owns it from 1 July 2027 to 30 June 2028, scored in four quarters.

Round by round you choose the car and how to pay for it, the insurance and the upkeep, what to do after a January crash and how to get through two lean months, and whether to refinance, pay down or trade up the loan and how to earn more in the summer.

Each quarter is scored on net worth, the car's monthly cost as a share of gross pay, interest, fees and losses, reliability and the credit and driving record; insuring the car as someone else's (fronting), or driving uninsured (Ohio Revised Code 4509.101), caps the score. English with Spanish.

Who it is for

An introductory simulation that assumes no prior knowledge of the subject, designed for undergraduate courses. It also works in vocational and high-school programmes and in onboarding sessions.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: Saturday 12 June 2027: the car and the money.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • The car you buy
  • How you pay for it
  • Your insurance from 1 October
  • The upkeep from 1 October
  • After the 5 January crash
  • February and March, with less pay
  • The loan from 1 April
