About this simulation

A 90-minute, 4-round basic Express simulation on building a small-business website for a real client as a freelancer: turning a messy brief into a signed scope with a fixed price and a change-order rule, choosing platform, hosting and domain on the client's total cost, using only images and fonts you have the right to use, building to WCAG 2.1 AA and testing with a keyboard and a screen reader, pricing late requests, fixing accessibility blockers first, and launching and handing the site over, for high-school Career and Technical Education in web design and development, capstone client projects and courses preparing Adobe Certified Professional - Web Design and IT Specialist - HTML and CSS.

Daniela Cota, 18, a fictional freelance web designer, builds the first website of Taqueria Los Ocotillos, a family-owned taqueria in Phoenix, Arizona, between February and the opening of online ordering on Thursday 1 April 2027.

Round by round you decide what you agree to build and for how much and where the site lives, where the images and fonts come from and how you check that everyone can use the site, how to answer the owner's late requests and in what order to fix an audit list with a keyboard trap in the checkout, and how the site goes live and what the owners get at handoff; at each decision point the launch and its first month are projected again with the decisions taken so far.

Each round is scored on online orders in the first month, accessibility barriers at launch, your unpaid late-night hours and the client's trust, with the core pages working shown alongside; publishing unlicensed images and fonts (17 U.S.C. 106 and 501) or launching the checkout with the known keyboard trap (ADA Title III, 42 U.S.C. 12182) caps the score. English with Spanish.

Who it is for

An introductory simulation that assumes no prior knowledge of the subject, designed for undergraduate courses. It also works in vocational and high-school programmes and in onboarding sessions.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: Monday 1 February 2027: the brief and the price.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • What you agree to build, and for how much
  • Where the site lives
  • Where the images and fonts come from
  • How you check that everyone can use it
  • The answer to his new requests
  • The order of the fixes
  • How the site goes live
  • What the Quinteros get
