About this simulation

A 90-minute, 4-round basic Express simulation on a high-school senior running her school's student print-and-design shop through one spring semester of club, team and local-business orders: taking every order on a job ticket with a proof step, pricing design and print jobs from cost and time with a minimum order and a design fee, declining a team logo the shop has no license for and offering an original design under the Lanham Act (15 U.S.C.

1114(1)), getting a written proof signed before the press runs, replacing images a customer has no right to with licensed or original artwork under the Copyright Act (17 U.S.C.

106 and 501(a)), pricing and scheduling a rush order, owning a misprint and closing the books from job-cost data with the activity-fund rules of 702 KAR 3:130, for high-school Career and Technical Education in graphic design and printing, with the Adobe Certified Professional credentials named as a hook.

Talia Vanmeter, 18, is the fictional student manager of Elk Fork Ink at the fictional Elk Fork High School in Bowling Green, Kentucky, in the spring semester 2028.

Round by round you decide how the shop takes orders and prices them, how to answer a youth league that wants a university logo and how jobs are approved, what to do with a bakery flyer built from images found online and a 48-hour rush, and how to handle a misprint and the semester's books; at each decision point the semester is projected again with the decisions taken so far.

Each round is scored on the orders right first time, the rework hours, the reprint rate, the semester profit and customer satisfaction, with open violations shown alongside; printing a team logo without a license, or a customer's artwork with images the customer has no right to, caps the score. English with Spanish.

What participants learn

After the session, participants will be able to:

  • Calculate the price of a design or print job from materials, press and design hours at a shop rate, fixed costs and a margin, with a minimum order, a design fee and a rush charge
  • Take every order on a job ticket and get a written proof signed before the press runs, so that a misprint is caught first or is clearly the shop's to own
  • Decide when to refuse a logo or image the shop has no right to print, and offer licensed or original artwork that keeps the customer
  • Compare every job's price with its actual cost to close the semester's books, and trace a misprint to the step that failed before reprinting at the shop's cost

Prerequisites

  • A first unit on print production

Who it is for

An introductory simulation that assumes no prior knowledge of the subject, designed for undergraduate courses. It also works in vocational and high-school programmes and in onboarding sessions.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: 18 January: orders and prices.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • How the shop takes orders
  • How jobs are priced
  • The youth league's university logo
  • How a job is approved
  • The flyer built from images found online
  • Eight senior-night banners in 48 hours
  • 60 Field Day shirts with the wrong date
  • Closing the semester
