About this simulation

A 90-minute, 4-round basic Express simulation on running a residential HVAC service day from a first-year technician's seat: triage of service calls by safety and customer risk before route and revenue, honest arrival windows, a measured diagnosis instead of parts-swapping or topping off refrigerant, refrigerant recovery and the venting prohibition under Clean Air Act section 608 (40 CFR 82.154), repair versus replace presented honestly in a written quote, a heat-vulnerable customer, closing jobs so they stay fixed, and overtime against the on-call handoff, for high-school Career and Technical Education in HVAC/R and the building trades, pre-apprenticeship programs and courses preparing EPA Section 608 Technician Certification and NCCER HVAC Level 1.

Tavion Greer, 19, a fictional first-year service technician with Cimarron Breeze Heating & Air, a family-owned company in Tulsa, Oklahoma, runs the board on a heat-wave Tuesday in July 2027 with sixteen no-cool calls for four trucks.

Round by round you decide the order of the board and what customers are told, how to diagnose a unit blowing warm air and what to do with the refrigerant in a leaking system, how to quote a nine-year-old system with a failed capacitor and what to do for an 81-year-old customer with no cooling, and how every job is closed and who takes the last two calls; at each decision point the day is projected again with the decisions taken so far.

Each round is scored on jobs fixed right, heat-risk hours, the callback rate, the day's margin and customer trust, with open violations shown alongside; venting refrigerant or selling a replacement the diagnosis does not support caps the score. English with Spanish.

Who it is for

An introductory simulation that assumes no prior knowledge of the subject, designed for undergraduate courses. It also works in vocational and high-school programmes and in onboarding sessions.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: 7:00 a.m.: the board.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • The order of the board
  • What customers are told
  • Bernice Lowder's warm air
  • Lyle Haskell's leaking coil
  • The Faircloth system
  • Opal Hensley, 81, alone at 91 °F
  • How every job of the day is closed
  • The two calls left, ten hours in
