About this simulation

A 90-minute, 4-round basic Express simulation for Spanish vocational training (Formacion Profesional), module 1568 Mantenimiento de redes of the Tecnico en Redes y Estaciones de Tratamiento de Aguas (Real Decreto 114/2017) and module 1578 Operaciones en redes e instalaciones de agua of the Tecnico Superior en Gestion del Agua (Real Decreto 113/2017).

The learner is Ainhoa Sanzol, a newly qualified network technician of a fictional water service, through 2027, on the drinking-water network of a town of about 41,000 inhabitants (two tanks, an arterial main, about 290 km of mains in four pressure sectors with pressure-reducing valves on telemetry, the valve register and the sector model in the GIS).

Four situations set the year's course: a frost-night burst, and how the break is isolated (on the valve plan, the fewest valves closed slowly in order, never the main valve slammed shut) and how the customers are told (the sensitive users first); a cracked cast-iron pipe, and how it is repaired (a new piece to the network standard) and how the stretch is disinfected before the water comes back (flushed, disinfected and sampled first, never restored without disinfection); a sector emptied in high summer, and how it is refilled (slowly from its low point with the air let out, never the main valve opened fully) and how the pressure is managed (on the sector model, lower at night); and an arterial break at night, answered through the mesh with the sensitive users served, and how the year's breaks are recorded.

Three critical errors cap the round: the main valve slammed shut, the supply restored without disinfection, the main valve opened fully on the refill. KPIs: customers back within 6 hours, network operating cost, water lost a quarter and incidents in the year. Lesson: closing the valves in the right order avoids a second break. Spanish primary, English parity.

Fictional network, company, town and people; real curriculum and rules (Real Decreto 3/2023) cited.

What participants learn

After the session, participants will be able to:

  • Isolate a burst main on the valve plan, closing the fewest valves one by one and slowly, the downstream ones first and the main one last, while watching the pressure
  • Notify customers before the cut reaches them, sensitive users first and then every customer of the sector with the expected return time, with a tanker where the cut will last
  • Repair to the standard and disinfect before service: replace the damaged piece with the right couplings, flush and disinfect the stretch and check the chlorine and a sample before customers drink
  • Explain water hammer as the momentum of a moving water column and use it to justify refilling a sector slowly from its low point with the air let out, and a lower pressure at night
  • Decide how to answer an arterial break through the network mesh: isolate it on the plan, back-feed the cut district through the interconnection, serve sensitive users, inform the health authority and record it

Who it is for

An introductory simulation that assumes no prior knowledge of the subject, designed for undergraduate courses. It also works in vocational and high-school programmes and in onboarding sessions.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: martes 12 de enero, 6:05: la rotura tras la helada y el aviso.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • Cómo se aísla la rotura
  • Cómo se avisa a los abonados
  • Cómo se repara la tubería
  • Cómo se desinfecta antes de devolver el agua
  • Cómo se llena el sector
  • Cómo se lleva la presión de los sectores
  • Cómo se responde a la rotura de la arteria
  • Cómo se registran las roturas del año
