About this simulation

A 90-minute, 4-round basic Express simulation for Spanish vocational training (Formacion Profesional), module 0954 Montaje y mantenimiento electrico-electronico of the Tecnico en Mantenimiento Electromecanico (Real Decreto 1589/2011), with module 1055 Mantenimiento de equipos de electronica industrial of the Tecnico Superior en Mantenimiento Electronico (Real Decreto 1578/2011).

The learner is Leire Arrospide, a newly qualified electromechanical maintenance technician at a fictional canning plant, Conservas Albercuna, between October 2027 and September 2028.

Four situations set the plant's course: a pallet conveyor that trips its motor protection relay three times in a night, and how the work is made safe (the five stages of Real Decreto 614/2001: disconnected, padlocked, the drive's DC bus discharged, the absence of voltage verified) and what is done with the trip (the fault code, the trip and the load read before any reset); the filler's motor that runs hot and smells of varnish, and how it is measured (isolated, disconnected from the drive, windings and insulation against its history) and what is done with the cause of its heat (load, bearings, alignment, cooling); a fan's frequency drive tripping on overvoltage and overcurrent and the filler's motor failing again, and what is done with the drive (its log and parameters against the commissioning record) and whether the motor is repaired or replaced (decided with data, and whatever comes back measured before service); and the review of how each fault is reported (measurements and settings in each motor's history) and closed (the critical motors followed before the campaign).

Without isolation there is no safe diagnosis.

Scored on the faults resolved right first time, the cost of the faults, the minutes of line stopped per fault and the exposure to electrical risk in person-hours; training-level decision practice that complements the module's supervised practical work and the training the regulation requires for electrical work, with no voltage, current, insulation value, setting or procedure given.

Three critical errors cap the round at 40: retightening terminals live with the line running (Real Decreto 614/2001, article 4.2 and annex II), setting the protection relay above the nameplate current and bypassing the drive with its thermistor disabled (Ley 31/1995, article 29.2.3). Spanish primary, English parity.

What participants learn

After the session, participants will be able to:

  • Apply the five stages before opening anything: feeder disconnected, padlocked and tagged, drive DC bus discharged, absence of voltage verified at motor and drive output, zone marked; never work live to save a stop
  • Analyze a trip before resetting it by reading the drive's fault code and history, the relay's trip and the load, and comparing the relay setting with the nameplate; never set a protection above it
  • Measure a motor isolated from the drive before condemning it: windings compared, insulation against its history, currents against the nameplate, and the heat traced to load, bearings, alignment or cooling
  • Decide whether to rewind or replace a motor on its measurements, hours, energy use and spare availability, after reading the drive's log and parameters against commissioning without bypassing it
  • Write a fault report with measurements, cause and settings in each motor's history, and plan insulation and thermography checks on the critical motors before the campaign

Who it is for

An introductory simulation that assumes no prior knowledge of the subject, designed for undergraduate courses. It also works in vocational and high-school programmes and in onboarding sessions.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: martes 16 de noviembre, 6:20: el transportador que dispara.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • Cómo se hace seguro el trabajo
  • Qué se hace con el disparo
  • Cómo se mide el motor
  • Qué se hace con la causa del calor
  • Qué se hace con el variador
  • Reparar o sustituir el motor
  • Cómo se informa cada avería
  • Cómo se cierra cada avería
