About this simulation

A 90-minute, 4-round basic Express simulation for Spanish vocational training (Formacion Profesional), module 0955 Montaje y mantenimiento de lineas automatizadas of the Tecnico en Mantenimiento Electromecanico (Real Decreto 1589/2011). The learner is Ainhoa Echegoyen, a newly qualified electromechanical maintenance technician at a fictional juice plant, Zumos Valdecerrada, between October 2027 and September 2028.

Four situations set the packaging line's course: the case packer stopped with three alarms on its HMI, and how the machine is made safe (main switch padlocked, air dumped, head blocked, a start tried; Real Decreto 1215/1997 annex II 1.14) and how the alarms are read (the first alarm, its time and its step before anything is acknowledged); the labeller that loses the bottles and the slow pneumatic head, and how the photocell's signal is followed along its chain and what is done with the pneumatics (pressures, leaks, valve and sensors against the diagram); the palletiser stopped at a step without an alarm, and how the PLC program is read (online in monitoring only) and in which order the tests are done (by hypotheses); and the annual review, with the work order in the GMAO and the close of each stop.

Three critical errors cap the round: a guard switch defeated, an input forced in the PLC, an interlock removed from the program. KPIs: stops resolved right first time, cost of the stops, time to repair per stop and parts changed without need. Spanish primary, English parity. Fictional companies and people; real regulations and curriculum cited.

What participants learn

After the session, participants will be able to:

  • Separate a stopped machine from all its energies before reaching in, with main switch padlocked, air dumped and head load blocked, and explain why a guard switch is not a lockout for maintenance
  • Distinguish the first alarm of a sequence in the HMI history, with its time and the step where the machine stopped, from the alarms that follow from it
  • Trace a sensor's signal from the HMI input screen to the sensor and read a pneumatic actuator's pressures, leaks, valve and end-of-stroke sensors against the diagram, replacing only the failing link
  • Prioritise the tests of an intermittent fault from written hypotheses, likeliest and cheapest first, after watching the PLC program online in monitoring only, never removing an interlock or forcing an input
  • Write a maintenance work order with the first alarm, tests, cause, parts and times, and use the repeated alarms to plan root-cause fixes before the campaign

Who it is for

An introductory simulation that assumes no prior knowledge of the subject, designed for undergraduate courses. It also works in vocational and high-school programmes and in onboarding sessions.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: lunes 15 de noviembre, 6:10: la encajadora parada con tres alarmas.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • Cómo se deja segura la máquina
  • Cómo se leen las alarmas
  • Cómo se sigue la señal de la fotocélula
  • Qué se hace con la neumática del cabezal
  • Cómo se lee el programa
  • En qué orden se hacen las pruebas
  • Cómo se registra cada parada
  • Cómo se cierra cada parada
