About this simulation

A 90-minute, 4-round basic Express simulation for Spanish vocational training (Formacion Profesional), module 0821 Laboratorio de protesis dentales of the Tecnico Superior en Protesis Dentales (Real Decreto 1687/2011), also usable in modules 0857 Restauraciones y estructuras metalicas en protesis fija and 0859 Restauraciones y recubrimientos esteticos of the same title.

The learner is Nerea Valtuille, a newly qualified dental technician who runs the order intake, the production plan and the buying of a fictional dental laboratory in Valladolid through 2027: fixed, removable and implant-supported prostheses for 38 clinics, always from the dentist's written prescription, with a casting line and a new CAD/CAM milling machine.

Four situations set the year's course: a chain's contract for 160 zirconia crowns a month and orders arriving without a prescription, and which orders are accepted (against each line's capacity, with a complete prescription) and how the capacity is shared (by the order mix between CAD/CAM and casting); a year of alloy on offer, unmarked zirconia discs online and stock-outs, and how the materials are bought (from consumption, CE-marked and traced by lot) and what dates are promised (by type of work and stage); a low-cost laboratory's price, remakes and patients sent to the laboratory, and how the works are priced (from each type's cost sheet) and checked (against the prescription and the model, the patient always sent back to the dentist); and the Christmas quarter, and how it is staffed (one temporary technician, the orders closed by date) and how the year is recorded (a laboratory record with its causes).

Two critical errors cap the round: zirconia discs with no CE marking and a prosthesis adjusted in the patient's mouth at the laboratory. KPIs: work on time, controllable cost, remakes per 1,000 units and clinic complaints. Lesson: capacity badly shared turns profitable orders into delays. Spanish primary, English parity. Fictional laboratory, company and people; real curriculum and rules cited.

What participants learn

After the session, participants will be able to:

  • Evaluate which orders to accept against each production line's weekly capacity, each with a complete written prescription, declining the rest in writing, and explain why an order pays only if its line has room
  • Analyze how to share capacity between the lines, sending each work to the line that makes it best and keeping both full, and what a single-machine plan does to the other line
  • Apply medical-device rules to buying: materials ordered from consumption with their marking, instructions and lot, an unmarked material refused with the reason, and dates agreed by type of work and stage
  • Calculate the cost of one type of work, check every work against the prescription and the model before delivery, and send a patient who comes to the laboratory back to the dentist, with the reason
  • Plan the Christmas quarter with one temporary technician and a closing date, and design the laboratory record that will make next January's capacity plan better

Who it is for

An introductory simulation that assumes no prior knowledge of the subject, designed for undergraduate courses. It also works in vocational and high-school programmes and in onboarding sessions.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: lunes 11 de enero, 9:00: los trabajos y la capacidad.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • Qué trabajos se aceptan, y cómo entran
  • Cómo se reparte la capacidad entre líneas
  • Cómo se compran los materiales
  • Qué fechas se prometen
  • Cómo se ponen los precios
  • Cómo se revisa cada trabajo
  • Cómo se organiza la Navidad
  • Cómo se registra el año
