About this simulation

A 90-minute, 4-round basic Express simulation for Spanish vocational training (Formacion Profesional), module 0716 Sistemas de accionamiento de equipos y aperos of the Tecnico en Electromecanica de Maquinaria (Real Decreto 255/2011).

The learner is Leire Urdaniz, a newly qualified field-service and hydraulics technician at a fictional workshop for agricultural and construction machinery, Talleres Sorban in Fuenterrobla.

Four situations set the workshop's course in 2027: a gravel pit's wheel loader slow on all its movements, left with its bucket half raised, and how the machine is secured (bucket lowered, engine stopped, key tagged, the pressure left in the circuit released) and the fault approached (operator, schematic, oil at working temperature, cycle times); a farm's compact loader slow once hot with cloudy oil, and how the flow and pressure are checked (flow meter and gauges at the test points, the loss isolated) and what is done with the oil (a sample and the way in of the water or dirt); a grain store's loader whose loaded bucket sinks and no longer lifts a full bucket, and how the drift (measured safely, cylinder or spool isolated) and the relief valve (measured, set only to the manufacturer's value) are dealt with; and the annual review of how the workshop works (written routine, plan by engine hours) and closes each job (cycles and pressures measured again).

Depressurising before opening is the first step of the diagnosis. Scored on the faults diagnosed right first time, the cost of diagnosis and parts, the hours a machine stands still per fault and the parts replaced without need; training-level decision practice that complements the module's supervised practical work and each manufacturer's procedures, with no pressure, flow, setting or procedure given.

Two critical safety errors cap the round at 40: a fitting cracked with the engine running (Real Decreto 1215/1997 annex II, 1.14), and the relief valve screwed up above the manufacturer's value (Real Decreto 1215/1997 annex II, 1.3, and annex I, 1.7). Spanish primary, English parity.

What participants learn

After the session, participants will be able to:

  • Depressurise a hydraulic machine before opening any line: bucket on the ground, engine stopped, key tagged, safety lever engaged, circuit pressure released, oil cooled, and leaks sought with cardboard, never by hand
  • Diagnose a slow machine from the operator, the record, the schematic, the oil at working temperature, stored faults and cycle times against the manufacturer's values before ordering any part
  • Select flow and pressure measurements at the test points, at working temperature and under load, to isolate pump, control valve or cylinder, and trace how dirt or water got in before changing the oil
  • Isolate the drift of a loaded bucket by the manufacturer's procedure with nobody under it, separate cylinder from control valve, and set the relief valve only to the manufacturer's value
  • Plan a workshop routine that re-measures cycles, pressures and drift under load before hand-back, quotes the diagnosis in writing, keeps an hours-based plan with seasonal oil samples and owns comebacks

Who it is for

An introductory simulation that assumes no prior knowledge of the subject, designed for undergraduate courses. It also works in vocational and high-school programmes and in onboarding sessions.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: martes 9 de febrero, 8:00: la pala cargadora que va lenta.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • Cómo se asegura la máquina antes de abrir el circuito
  • Cómo se enfoca primero la avería
  • Cómo se comprueban el caudal y la presión
  • Qué se hace con el aceite
  • Qué se hace con la cuchara que se baja
  • Qué se hace con la válvula limitadora
  • Cómo trabaja el taller
  • Cómo se cierra cada trabajo
