A 90-minute, 4-round Express simulation in the learner's own chair on the morning a company-wide hiring freeze is announced and the ten weeks after it: who hears it first and how - the person the freeze hits hardest, in person, and then the whole team the same morning; saying what is decided, what is not and when it will be reviewed, rather than promising the posts back in January; telling a finalist who was told the offer was coming the truth, in time and in writing; re-planning the roadmap with product instead of asking the same people for more; a stay conversation with a developer who has an outside offer while pay is frozen; asking for extra December hours by the rules - voluntary, recorded and compensated with rest; and planning the release with the people you have.

Raquel Huelamo Canete (fictional) leads the eight-person platform team of Mangana Software, a fictional Cuenca maker of management software for agrifood cooperatives; the freeze cancels her two approved posts while nine cooperatives wait for a new settlements module in March.

You decide who hears it first and what you say about what is not decided, what you do with the finalist and with the March roadmap, what you say to the developer with an outside offer and what you do with the December push, and how you prepare the March release and close the quarter.

Scored on the freeze understood and managed, the chance of reaching June with the whole team, the module's revenue protected, your time and energy, your team's trust and the senior developer's trust, and open risk; two shortcuts (the December hours off the clock, the finalist brought in through a friend's company) come back and cap the score.
