About this simulation

A 90-minute, 4-round basic Express simulation for Spanish vocational training (Formacion Profesional), module 1560 Estaciones de tratamiento de aguas of the Tecnico en Redes y Estaciones de Tratamiento de Aguas (Real Decreto 114/2017) and module 1573 Calidad y tratamiento de aguas of the Tecnico Superior en Gestion del Agua (Real Decreto 113/2017).

The learner is Lucia Ballestin, a newly qualified shift operator of a fictional water service, through 2027, at a drinking-water treatment plant (river intake, coagulation and flocculation, lamella settlers, rapid sand filters, chlorination and a treated-water tank) and an urban wastewater treatment plant (screens, storm tank, primary settling, activated-sludge reactors aerated on dissolved-oxygen probes, secondary clarifiers, sludge purge).

Four situations set the year's course: a storm on the river and a failing chlorine pump, and how the coagulant is dosed (a jar test as the turbidity rises, not a dose raised when the filtered water alarms) and how the chlorine is dosed (on the demand and the residual, never water supplied without disinfection); the spring demand, and how the plant flow is run (on the demand and the tanks) and how the filters are washed (on head loss and turbidity, run to waste, never bypassed); the canning season at the wastewater plant, and how the aeration is run (on the oxygen probes ahead of the load) and how the sludge is purged (on the sludge age); and a night storm with a dark discharge, answered with the storm tank, a sample and the source traced, never an untreated bypass to the river, and how the year's incidents are recorded.

Three critical errors cap the round: water supplied without disinfection, the filtration bypassed, an untreated bypass to the river. KPIs: analyses within limits, reagent and energy cost, user complaints a week and incidents in the year. Lesson: anticipating the event costs less reagent than correcting it. Spanish primary, English parity.

Fictional plants, companies, river and people; real curriculum and rules (Real Decreto 3/2023, Real Decreto 509/1996) cited.

What participants learn

After the session, participants will be able to:

  • Set the coagulant dose from a jar test on the rising raw water and check it on the settled and filtered water, instead of raising it only when the filtered-water alarm sounds
  • Apply chlorine dosing on the demand and the residual, keep the contact time and check the analysers so that no water is ever supplied without disinfection
  • Change the plant flow in small steps on the demand and the tanks, and wash the filters on head loss and turbidity with the first water to waste, never bypassing filtration
  • Analyze dissolved-oxygen readings and sludge age to run the aeration ahead of the summer load and purge the sludge in the biological stage of a wastewater plant
  • Decide how to answer a storm and an anomalous discharge so the river is protected: fill the storm tank, trace the source, overflow only through the authorised point and write an incident report

Prerequisites

  • Has seen a jar test

Who it is for

An introductory simulation that assumes no prior knowledge of the subject, designed for undergraduate courses. It also works in vocational and high-school programmes and in onboarding sessions.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: lunes 1 de febrero, 5:40: la tormenta en el río y el cloro.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • Cómo se dosifica el coagulante ante la tormenta
  • Cómo se dosifica el cloro
  • Cómo se lleva el caudal de la planta
  • Cómo se lavan los filtros
  • Cómo se lleva la aireación
  • Cómo se purgan los fangos
  • Cómo se responde a la tormenta y al vertido
  • Cómo se registran las incidencias del año
