About this simulation

A 90-minute, 4-round basic Express simulation on running a high-school robotics team's build season as a small project organization, for high-school CTE engineering and engineering-technology programs and robotics clubs: building a season budget from last year's actuals with a reserve; a sponsorship plan that says what each sponsor's money buys; a build schedule planned backward from inspection day; roles, cross-training and weekly hour limits that keep a volunteer team from burning out; buying only parts the competition rules allow and listing every one on the bill of materials; reporting a restricted sponsor gift exactly as it was spent (Indiana Code IC 20-41-1-8); and handing the team to next year's leaders.

FIRST Robotics Competition is named as a context only. Rosalind Ekwueme, 17, is the fictional business captain of Team Torque, the robotics team of the fictional Wildcat Fork High School near Kokomo, Indiana, from kickoff on 8 January 2028 to the fictional Gearworks Robotics League regional in Indianapolis on 23-25 March 2028.

Round by round you decide how the season budget is built and how the team asks for sponsorship, how the build is scheduled and how the team is organized, how a failed drivetrain is replaced and what the team does about the strain, and how the sponsor report is written and how the season ends; at each team meeting the season is projected again with the decisions taken so far.

Each round is scored on the points on the field, the crunch hours, the season risk, the budget left and the sponsors' confidence, with open violations shown alongside; hiding a part the rules ban at inspection or misreporting sponsor funds caps the score. English with Spanish.

What participants learn

After the session, participants will be able to:

  • Design a season budget from last year's actuals with a reserve, and a sponsorship packet that says what each level buys, asked for in person
  • Plan the build schedule backward from inspection day, with driver practice, a practice inspection and a buffer before it and the build fitted into what is left
  • Organize a volunteer team with sub-team leads, a second role for every student, an enforced weekly hour limit and recovery time before the final weeks
  • Decide purchases within the competition rules, using only legal parts listed on the bill of materials and asking rules questions in writing before buying
  • Justify reporting every restricted sponsor dollar as it was actually spent, with the sponsor's approval for any change, and plan the team's handover to next year's students

Who it is for

An introductory simulation that assumes no prior knowledge of the subject, designed for undergraduate courses. It also works in vocational and high-school programmes and in onboarding sessions.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: 8 January 2028: kickoff — the budget and the sponsors.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • How the season budget is built
  • How the team asks for sponsorship
  • How the build is scheduled
  • How the team is organized
  • How the team gets its drivetrain back
  • What the team does about the strain
  • How the sponsor report is written
  • How the season ends
