About this simulation

Maniobra en un centro de transformacion (Substation Switching). Spanish vocational training (FP), grado medio: module 0236 Instalaciones de distribucion of the Tecnico en Instalaciones Electricas y Automaticas (Real Decreto 177/2008).

The learner is Yaiza Requejo, maintenance technician of a fictional installation company, designated person in charge of the work for a planned Saturday outage of a prefabricated 20 kV transformer substation on an industrial estate: two line cells on an underground ring, a protection cell with load-break switch, fuses and earthing switch, a 630 kVA transformer and a low-voltage board feeding 240 customers, among them a cold store with a standby generator and fourteen solar self-consumption installations.

Four rounds, four phases of one outage: the preparation (a written switching programme listing every source, agreed with the distribution company's control centre; two people with checked equipment), disconnecting and locking (low voltage opened before the protection cell, the ring untouched; padlocks and signs on everything that can backfeed the transformer), verifying and earthing (a detector tested before and after on every live part; an interlock that refuses read as a warning; earths on the high- and low-voltage sides) and the return to service (reverse order on a signed end of work, every step announced).

Eight four-option decisions scored on switching safety, delay, avoidable customer-minutes off supply and coordination with the control centre; three critical errors cap the round at 40: leaving a low-voltage source able to backfeed the transformer, forcing an interlock, and re-energising without checking people and earths. Lesson: the five golden rules come every time, and in order.

Training level only: decision practice that complements supervised practical training; fictional company, places and people; no real operational figures. Spanish player-facing strings with full English parity.

What participants learn

After the session, participants will be able to:

  • Design a switching programme on the single-line diagram that lists every source able to energise the substation on both the high- and low-voltage sides, agreed with the control centre
  • Disconnect and lock out in order: open the low-voltage side before the protection cell, leave the ring's line cells to the distribution company, confirm positions, and lock and sign every source
  • Verify the absence of voltage on every live part with a detector checked before and after, read a refusing interlock as a warning, and earth both voltage sides before the fitters start
  • Return the substation to service in reverse order on a signed end of work, with nobody and no earths left inside, closing the cell before bringing the feeders back one by one
  • Evaluate the outage as a whole, announcing every step to the control centre and dependent customers, and argue with figures why the fastest-looking and most cautious-looking options are rarely best

Who it is for

An intermediate simulation for participants who already know the core concepts of the subject, designed for master's and MBA programmes.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: Sábado 13 de marzo, 07:30: la preparación.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • Con qué plan maniobras
  • Cómo se prepara el equipo
  • Cómo desconectas el centro
  • Cómo impides que vuelva la tensión
  • Cómo verificas la ausencia de tensión
  • Qué haces con la puesta a tierra
  • Cómo devuelves el centro al servicio
  • A quién avisas y cómo
