About this simulation

A 90-minute, 4-round basic Express simulation for Spanish vocational training (Formacion Profesional), module 0921 Administracion y promocion de audiovisuales y espectaculos of the Tecnico Superior en Produccion de Audiovisuales y Espectaculos (Real Decreto 1681/2011).

The learner is Irene Vilarrasa, a newly qualified audiovisual production technician who runs the promotion and exploitation of a small Spanish feature film released by a fictional production and distribution company in Seville through 2027: a promotion budget of 180,000 euros, a release in cinemas in April, a summer in cinemas and on video on demand, and a platform window in the autumn.

Four situations set the year's course: a previous film whose promotion brought few spectators back, and how the promotion is spent (a plan by channel for the film's audience, concentrated on the release) and on how many screens it opens (about 90 chosen for that audience, with a minimum of weeks); the week of the release, and how the trailer and materials are made (the song licensed, the age rating on every piece) and how the film is shown before the release (previews for its audience); a summer of falling box office and an early platform offer, and how the screens are followed (screen by screen on the weekly box office) and how the windows are sold (staggered by contract with minimum guarantees); and the autumn, and how the film is relaunched (for its audience, with the rating visible) and how the release is reported (the cost per spectator of every channel and a final balance).

Two critical errors cap the round: a trailer cut over a famous song with no licence and the relaunch advertised without the age rating. KPIs: promotion with return, controllable cost, sessions empty or cancelled per 1,000 and thousand spectators lost. Lesson: promotion concentrated on the release decides the film's commercial life. Spanish primary, English parity.

Fictional film, company and people; real curriculum and rules cited.

What participants learn

After the session, participants will be able to:

  • Plan a film's promotion by channel for its audience, concentrated before the release and its opening weekend, measuring the cost per spectator of each channel and moving money to what works
  • Evaluate how many screens and which cities to open on, checking the date and signing contracts with a minimum of weeks, and explain why both 300 screens and 12 screens lose
  • Apply rights and rating rules to the campaign, licensing the trailer's music or using the film's own score, showing the age rating on every piece and running preview screenings for the audience
  • Analyze the weekly box office to manage screens and stagger exploitation windows by contract with minimum guarantees, and explain what a same-week platform release does to exhibitors
  • Design a relaunch for the film's audience and a release report with the cost per spectator of every channel, the settlements checked, the income of each window and the final balance

Who it is for

An introductory simulation that assumes no prior knowledge of the subject, designed for undergraduate courses. It also works in vocational and high-school programmes and in onboarding sessions.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: lunes 11 de enero, 9:00: la promoción y las salas.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • Cómo se gasta la promoción
  • En cuántas salas se estrena
  • Cómo se hacen el tráiler y los materiales
  • Cómo se enseña antes del estreno
  • Cómo se siguen las salas en verano
  • Cómo se venden las ventanas
  • Cómo se relanza en otoño
  • Cómo se hace el informe del estreno
