About this simulation

A 90-minute, 4-round basic Express simulation on investing from the first paycheck, for high-school personal-finance courses, finance and business Career and Technical Education, FBLA and DECA chapters and youth financial-education programs.

Yesenia Tolentino, 17, a fictional high-school junior in Fresno, California, invests $3,000 of summer-job earnings and follows the money for ten years, July 2027 to June 2037, along one scripted, fictional market path: a rise, a hype peak, a crash and a recovery, scored in four thirty-month periods.

Round by round you choose the account and what it buys, the contribution habit and your answer to the hype, what to do at the bottom of the crash and how to meet a car repair, and who manages the money and how much of your first salary you invest.

Each period is scored on portfolio value, growth above the money put in, costs, diversification and investor discipline; a false birth date on a trading-app application (31 CFR 1023.220), or being paid to promote a coin without disclosure (Securities Act of 1933, section 17(b)), caps the score. English with Spanish.

Who it is for

An introductory simulation that assumes no prior knowledge of the subject, designed for undergraduate courses. It also works in vocational and high-school programmes and in onboarding sessions.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: Thursday 1 July 2027: the account and the first fund.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • Where the $3,000 goes — for the whole decade
  • What the account buys
  • How new money goes in from January 2030
  • Your answer to the hype
  • What you do with the account at the bottom
  • How you will pay the $2,400 repair
  • Who manages the money from January 2035
  • How much of the $52,000 salary you invest
