About this simulation

A 90-minute, 4-round basic Express simulation for Spanish vocational training (Formacion Profesional), module 0976 Sistemas logicos de material rodante ferroviario of the Tecnico en Mantenimiento de Material Rodante Ferroviario (Real Decreto 1145/2012).

The learner is Valerio Etxenagusia, a newly qualified rolling-stock maintenance technician on the door faults of the Navalcardena depot of a fictional regional railway operator, Trenes Somontejo.

Four situations set the depot's course in 2027: a door-closed lamp that flickers and traction lost, and how the unit is made safe before any door cover is opened (parking brake, wheels chocked, cab key withdrawn, movements blocked, the door's breaker locked out and tagged, the absence of voltage checked) and how the TCMS log is read (door by door, with the wiring diagram of the door loop and the traction interlock); a door loop that opens for a second, and how its open point is found (measured along the loop in halves, only the open part replaced) and the relays checked (tested against the diagram, the replacement bench-tested; a door taken out of service only with its own device); a door that will not lock, and how the limit switch and the lock are checked (against the maker's values) and how the unit goes back to service (a complete functional door test, traction refused with any door open, the unit held if any point fails); and the annual review of how each fault is reported (TCMS codes, root cause, serial numbers, the entity in charge of maintenance) and closed (thirty days of follow-up, repeated faults reviewed).

Bridging a safety to keep the timetable turns a fault into a risk.

Scored on the door faults right first time, the cost of the door-fault work, the hours of service lost per fault and the components replaced without need; training-level decision practice that complements the module's supervised practical work, the depot's procedures and the makers' manuals, with no voltage, resistance, adjustment value or procedure given.

Two critical errors cap the round at 40: the door cover opened live with the unit not protected (Real Decreto 614/2001; Real Decreto 1215/1997, Annex II, point 1.14), and the door loop bridged to send the unit out (Ley 31/1995, article 29.2.3; Decision 2011/291/EU, section 4.2.5.6). Spanish primary, English parity.

What participants learn

After the session, participants will be able to:

  • Protect the unit and isolate the door before any cover is opened: parking brake, chocks, cab key out, no-move signs, door breaker locked out and tagged, drive de-energised, absence of voltage checked and leaves secured
  • Analyze the TCMS event log door by door, which signal was missing, when and under which command, with the door-loop wiring diagram, to choose the point to measure
  • Locate the open point of the door loop by measuring voltage along it and splitting it in halves, test relays on the unit and the replacement on the bench, and isolate a door only as a degraded condition
  • Justify never bridging the door loop whatever the timetable needs, checking the limit switch and lock against the maker's values and running a full door test with traction refused while a door is open
  • Write a fault report with the TCMS codes, root cause and replaced serial numbers for the entity in charge of maintenance, and plan a thirty-day follow-up with a monthly review of repeated faults

Who it is for

An introductory simulation that assumes no prior knowledge of the subject, designed for undergraduate courses. It also works in vocational and high-school programmes and in onboarding sessions.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: martes 2 de febrero, 6:15: el piloto que parpadea.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • Cómo se deja segura la unidad antes de abrir una tapa
  • Cómo se lee el registro del TCMS
  • Cómo se encuentra el punto abierto del lazo
  • Cómo se revisan los relés
  • Cómo se revisan el final de carrera y la cerradura
  • Cómo vuelve la unidad al servicio
  • Cómo se informa cada avería
  • Cómo se cierra cada avería
