About this simulation

A 90-minute, 4-round basic Express simulation for Spanish vocational training (Formacion Profesional, grado superior), module 0353 Gestion del montaje y mantenimiento de instalaciones solares termicas of the Tecnico Superior en Eficiencia Energetica y Energia Solar Termica.

You are Noelia Talens, the new technical manager of a fictional maintenance company in the province of Valencia with 60 contracts on solar thermal hot-water installations of hotels, residences, sports centres and blocks of flats.

Through the 2027 contract year you decide the contracts (a price that pays the full RITE and legionella plan, last year's price, a low price to win a tender, or a guaranteed yield) and the team (three trained technicians, the same two, untrained hires or subcontracted peaks); the preventive plan (by installation, one visit a year, calls only, or signed checklists without the visits) and the summer (heat dissipators and glycol checks, nothing, tarpaulins or drained circuits); spares (critical spares, order on failure, a large store or non-original parts) and the hot-water temperature (60 C in storage, the client's setting, 45 C or weekly thermal shocks); and the follow-up and the answer to a positive legionella sample at the largest client's hotel.

Each round is scored on the projected contract year: margin, solar yield, RITE and legionella compliance, expected legionella positives and client retention, with breakdowns and breaches shown but not scored. Cheap maintenance is paid for in yield and in legionella risk.

Signing checklists without the visits, or lowering the hot water to 45 C, caps the score (RITE, Real Decreto 1027/2007, article 27 and IT 3.3; Real Decreto 487/2022, Annex III). Spanish with English.

Who it is for

An introductory simulation that assumes no prior knowledge of the subject, designed for undergraduate courses. It also works in vocational and high-school programmes and in onboarding sessions.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: Lunes 8 de febrero de 2027: los contratos y el equipo.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • Los contratos
  • El equipo
  • El plan preventivo
  • El verano
  • Los repuestos
  • La temperatura del agua
  • El seguimiento
  • El positivo del hotel
