About this simulation

A 90-minute, 4-round basic Express simulation for Spanish vocational training (Formacion Profesional), module 0742 Sistemas auxiliares del motor diesel of the Tecnico en Electromecanica de Maquinaria (Real Decreto 255/2011; the same module in the Tecnico en Mantenimiento de Material Rodante Ferroviario, Real Decreto 1145/2012).

The learner is Hector Quilez, a newly qualified field-service and diesel technician at a fictional workshop for agricultural and construction machinery, Talleres Ortubia in Torrecabrega.

Four situations set the workshop's course in 2027: a crawler excavator that loses power with black smoke, stopped with its arm raised, and how the machine is secured (arm lowered, engine stopped, key tagged, residual pressure released) and the fault approached (operator, hour meter, codes and live values); a tractor losing power while baling, and how the air path (boost, intake leaks, turbo) and the fuel (water, a fuel sample, the low-pressure side first) are checked; a wheel loader with its particulate filter clogged, coolant dropping and white smoke, and how the filter (soot load, cause, a safe parked regeneration) and the EGR are dealt with; and the annual review of how the workshop works (written routine, service plan by engine hours) and closes each job (a test under load).

Every hour a machine stands still costs more than the test that would have avoided it.

Scored on the faults diagnosed right first time, the cost of diagnosis and parts, the hours a machine stands still per fault and the parts replaced without need; training-level decision practice that complements the module's supervised practical work and each manufacturer's procedures, with no pressure, temperature or procedure given.

Two critical safety errors cap the round at 40: work under a raised arm with the engine running (Real Decreto 1215/1997 annex II, 1.14), and a particulate filter emptied and disabled (Regulation (EU) 2016/1628 art. 18(4)). Spanish primary, English parity.

Who it is for

An introductory simulation that assumes no prior knowledge of the subject, designed for undergraduate courses. It also works in vocational and high-school programmes and in onboarding sessions.

How a session runs

  1. The instructor creates a session from the Eureka dashboard and invites the participants.
  2. Participants play 4 rounds. In each one they submit their decisions and the simulation calculates the results. The first round opens with: jueves 18 de febrero, 8:00: la excavadora que pierde potencia.
  3. The simulation can be run in English, Español.
  4. The instructor follows each participant's progress and results from the dashboard, and uses the class results for the debrief.

Decisions participants make

The decisions participants make during the simulation:

  • Cómo se asegura la máquina antes del trabajo
  • Cómo se enfoca primero la avería
  • Cómo se revisan el circuito de aire y el turbo
  • Cómo se revisa el gasóleo
  • Qué se hace con el filtro de partículas
  • Qué se hace con la EGR y la pérdida de refrigerante
  • Cómo trabaja el taller
  • Cómo se cierra cada trabajo
