About this simulation

The learner is a 41-year-old head of management control at a fictional Madrid packaging group who is offered three years as finance director of its Bogota subsidiary, as a Spanish tax resident, and must decide where he pays tax each year and why.

Decision 1, Monday 4 October 2027: how he does the numbers (gross, net in Colombia only, or net in both countries year by year), when the family moves (stays in Madrid, all go in January 2028, or they join in July 2028, which can keep 2028 a Spanish resident year) and who advises him (group HR, the group tax provider, or his own adviser in both countries).

Decision 2: his Spanish contract (ended, an assignment letter keeping it suspended with a reserved post, or a voluntary leave), the Madrid flat (empty, holiday lets, or a long-term let) and the papers before leaving (none, the change of address, or the change of address, the payroll communication, a day log and a Colombian residence certificate).

Decision 3: the Spanish rent (declared deducting expenses, not declared, or declared as a non-resident at 24 per cent of the gross), the Colombian return (salary only, worldwide income with the credit for the Spanish tax, or without the credit) and the answer to a letter from the Spanish tax office (ignore, pay, or answer with evidence and the treaty tie-breaker).

Decision 4: the impatriate regime (apply although he lacks the five years away, do not apply, or keep pay on the Colombian payroll), the date of the return (1 July 2030, 23 August 2030, or January 2031) and leaving Colombia (just leave, leave it to payroll, or file the final Colombian return).

A deterministic model turns these into net savings against staying in thousands of euros, a family index, tax order, open tax risk and tax paid twice. The score combines the quality of each decision with those outcomes and is capped when the Spanish rent is left undeclared. Spanish (primary, Spain) and English.
